Thanks to You We’re Through to Round Two!

by Subset on March 29, 2010

The Subsetters were out in force on Saturday night in Tufnell Park for the Surface Unsigned competition and it was great to see you all there!

The alcohol was flowing and 9pm seemed to come around ever so quickly.

The organisation at the Zimbalam Surface Unsigned was faultless and Subset hit the stage pretty much at the allotted time.

The lads were definitely up for it from the first note of their opener ‘Slimy’ and the pace continued through ‘Airboat Ticket’.

The crowd was behind them and even the other competitors and their fans were seen bouncing around to ‘Dalston Blaster’ and then grooving to the emponymous ‘Subset’.

In no time at all the last tune, ‘Count Down to Adoration’, was already building up to its climax with Rom climbing onto the drums to join Steve for a two-person drum solo. In true Subset style the lights were cut and that was their 20 minutes done.

Whilst the next three bands played Rom, Steve, Rob and Jay had a well earned drink(s) and made new friends as well as thanking the loyal bunch of Subsetters that had travelled from as far as Milton Keynes, Dunstable and Luton. One intrepid Subsetter, Thom, had literally just arrived back from Paris before coming to The Boston Arms Music Rooms – That’s dedication!

All Subsetters that attended received a Subset USB stick that contains MP3′s and the ‘When the Dressing Gown Falls Down’ video – if you didn’t get one let us know :)

The votes have all been displayed on the Surface Unsigned website and Subset gathered the second largest amount of votes overall. The breakdown of the picture below reads from left to right: Text Votes (33), Audience Votes (175) and Votes from Other Bands (20)  :)

Rob, Rom, Steve and Jay are extremely grateful to all that attended and all of you that voted by text – it’s thanks to you that Subset will be playing in Round Two of the Zimbalam Surface Unsigned Competition.

Round Two will see Subset playing at the Bridgehouse 2 in Canning Town, East London.

The Bridge House Pub in Canning Town London E16 was the premier pub rock venue of the 70′s and the first pub in the world with its own record label and became a mecca of music, where any new bands wishing to make it into the music industry had to be seen playing there.

U2 played there on their first visit to London from Ireland. Depeche Mode played there for a year and Bridgehouse helped them get a deal with Mute records. Cafe Racers played, they later changed their name to Dire Straits. Paul Young and his band Q-Tips had a residency there for 9 months. Iron Maiden played over 35 times with three different singers. Tom Robinson fine tuned 2.4.6.8 while playing there. A Flock of Seagulls got signed there. Billy Bragg played and won a talent contest there. The Police used to ring regularly for a gig, but with a name like that the venue was never going to give them a gig in Canning Town! Other regulars included; Jeff Beck, Squeeze, Blow Monkeys, Girls School, Sham 69, The Damned, Cockney Rejects, Glen Matlock, Lena Lovich, The Vibrators, Joan Jett, Uk Subs, Stray Cats, The Skids, Soft Cell, John Cooper Clark and Splodgenessabounds.

To get to Bridgehouse 2: The nearest Underground station is Canning Town on the Jubilee Line (5 minute walk) Or West Ham on the District Line (10 – 15 minute walk).

More details will be posted up on SubsetBand.com as well as Facebook and Myspace nearer the time.

See you there!
